New Nimbus note for iPad: web-clipper and improved editor

We are pleased to announce the release of a new version of Nimbus Note for iPad. There are several important things that are different in the new version:

1) Web Clipper

Saving various information from the Internet is among the most frequently used features in Nimbus Note. While special clippers are used for desktop browsers and Android devices, we decided not to devise a separate app for iPad, “stuffing” the clipper right inside the app. The clipper comes with a few features:

– Allows you to select a specific fragment of an internet page and save it to Nimbus Note (text is saved with all and any images);

– “Pulls” an article from a site, similar to Pocket or Instapaper;

– Makes and a site screenshot and saves it to your account;

2) Improved editor

Numerous changes have also been introduced to our editor. Here’s what we added:

– possibility to create bullet and numbered lists;

– possibility to select font for your text;

– text highlighter;

– possibility to align text left or right, as well as center text.

We have also significantly improved the app performance and synchronization speed. We will be happy to answer any additional questions you may have.

Time and Locations Reminders for Nimbus Note for iPhone

We are pleased to announce that we have added a new reminder feature to Nimbus Note for iPhone. This feature will help you finish your planned business in time. It is worth noting that reminders are the most requested feature, and our users asked us to create not only time-based reminders but also location-based reminders which we gladly did.

Time reminders

To add a new reminder to a note is very simple – just click on the corresponding icon in note preview and select the desired type: time-based or location-based. When you select a time-based reminder, you can set date and time for the application to remind you about the note. There is also a repeat function activated after a certain period of time.

Location reminders

Often there are situations when time-based reminders are useless as it may be not clear when you will get to a certain place. In such cases, location-based reminders will come in handy. They will give you an opportunity to not only focus on hours, minutes and seconds but also to receive reminders upon arrival to work or shop. Location-based reminders are not complicated either – you just select a place (or find it through a search form) and put a pin on it … and that’s it. And when you get to that place, you will only have to wait for your notification from the application.

New Nimbus Note for Windows: server backups, import from Opera 12 and other features

We are pleased to announce the release of a new Nimbus Note version for Windows. A number of useful features have been added. Here they come:

Server backups

Unfortunately, it’s pretty common to lose all your notes. That may happen for different reasons: the notes get deleted by accident, there’s a synchronization error etc. If before the problem was virtually impossible to solve, now you can always restore the lost notes from the server backup. For free accounts, server backups are stored for 2 weeks. For Nimbus Pro accounts, backups are stored for 10 weeks. Any Nimbus Note user can restore data from backup.

Quick opening of notes with current tag

There are often cases when you open a note with a certain tag and need to view other notes with the same tag. Surely, you can find the tag on the list, but it takes forever and is not at all convenient. Now Nimbus Note allows you to just double click the tag in your note to view all notes with the same tag.

Sort tags and folders by popularity

By default, all folders and tags are sorted by date: it makes sense in most cases. But what if from the great variety of tags, only a few ones are used often enough? How do you locate them quickly? It’s very simple – right click on All My Notes or Tags and select Sort by Popularity. On the top of the new list you will see the tags you use most often.

Import notes from Opera 12

Opera 12 is no longer supported, but it remains very popular still: its speed, user-friendly interface and other features placed this browser among the market leaders. Opera 12 came with its own notes: you could add text from internet pages or type stuff yourself. Now you can continue working with those notes in Nimbus Note, as we added a special tool to import notes. You just need to locate a file notes.adr (usually located at C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Opera\Opera\profile\) and import it through Import – Import from Opera file.

Full-screen mode in a large window

Nothing should keep you from comfortable work with your notes, including… the app interface. This is why we added the possibility of enabling full-screen mode using the F11 button. This will let you concentrate on your text without a single distraction.

Often there are situations when after opening a note with a tag you then need to find other notes with that tag. 3) Drag & Drop text files

You have some text files and you need to create new notes based on those files? No problem! Just drag and drop your files into the notes and the files’ contents will be automatically imported into the note.

4) Sort tags and folders by popularity

This tool came to Nimbus Note from Microsoft Word. We launched Nimbus Screenshot App for Google Chrome

We are excited to announce the release of Nimbus Screenshot App. Nimbus Screenshot App is different from our add-on Nimbus Screenshot in a number of ways:

1) It’s launched through the app panel in Google Chrome.

2) You can make a screenshot of just the active window. This is a disadvantage, on the one hand, as you will not be able to select a fragment of your screen or make a full page screenshot. On the other hand, you are no longer limited by the Google Chrome window, i.e. you can make a screenshot of a Skype of a Photoshop window.

3) Besides screenshots, you can also edit images from your computer. It’s not fully-featured Photoshop, obviously, but still pretty good.

The rest is familiar – same convenient functional editor that also allows saving your creations to Nimbus Note and Google Drive.

We launched Nimbus Note channel on IFTTT

We are pleased to announce that a Nimbus Note channel appeared within the popular IFTTT service. At the moment, one action is available – creating a new note. IFTTT’s principle of operation is very simple. Each task, which is referred to as a ‘recipe’, consists of two parts – a ‘trigger’ and an ‘action’. The ‘trigger’ is a specific condition that results in execution of a specific  action.

Simply put, activation of a ‘trigger’ leads to execution of an ‘action’. – “If this… then that… ” One action is currently available for Nimbus Note – creating a new note. So, you can automatically send new e-mails from Gmail to Nimbus Note, as well as Github tasks or new articles from GetPocket.

New Nimbus Clipper for Android: “Material” design and Annotation of PDF-documents

Nimbus Clipper has long been a convenient assistant for our main application for making notes. With the help of our clipper, you can easily save an article from a website, take a screenshot, and edit a picture. Today we are pleased to present an upgraded version of our application featuring a new facility that allows users to work with PDF files, as well as new material design.

Work on the application

To create from scratch a new component for working with PDF files is a long and difficult process. Therefore, we decided to choose a ready-made product from among many available options. Initially, we planned to use a paid version and even tested toolkits by Foxit and Qoppa, but then we came across MuPDF and decided to use it. There are several reasons for this:

  • Open source code (which is actually the main reason);
  • Quite a large number of tools;

  • Stable operation (MuPDF can handle even fairly complex and large documents which turned out to be a too hard a nut to crack for Foxit).

 Annotation of PDF-documents

It is quite simple to work with annotation features of PDF documents in Nimbus Clipper. It is enough to click “Work with PDF” on the main screen and select a file through a convenient file manager. Next, you can add a comment to the text, point to a desired fragment using an arrow, or draw an arbitrarily chosen figure. It is also worth noting that it is possible to highlight a text with a highlighter or cross it out. At the end, the document can be saved to an SD-card or Nimbus Note.

Material design

 In accordance with the latest trends, we have updated the design to meet the latest “material” requirements. The problem was not the easiest one, as the design requires certain changes in the logic of the application and has to be done in such a way as to prevent users from experiencing any discomfort after switching from the previous version.

Major changes have taken place with regard to the browser, where we could not help adding a “floating” button which has already become a kind of symbol of all new design from Google. It is through this button, that you can now decide how to save a web page: just as an article, a selected fragment, or as a screenshot.

Like in the previous version, before being sent to Nimbus Note, the text can be seen in the previews.
